How Universities Can Teach Students to Respect Different Cultures
Although a little old, this media article addresses the need for intercultural competence (a skillset and mentality to “engage successfully across differences”). Essentially, I thought that this article addressed the most fundamental component of diversity: learning how to address it in our daily lives. The article goes on to address the ways that universities cultivate this characteristic in the younger generations. Much of what the article stresses is overall sensitivity/ respect and awareness of interpersonal differences. I really think that this is an important concept for people to incorporate into their lives. Most of the time, people find the topic of diversity and the issues accompanying it large and overwhelming- they feel defeated by the sheer magnitude and significance of societal problems. However, if we initiate change on an individual scale as described in the article, the problems regarding diversity become manageable and we feel that we can actually do something about it. By changing the way that we interact with the people in our lives (and the more people do the same) the better equipped we will be to address the bigger issues that face our modern society.
